"ElderLaw Services and Concerned Citizens Defeat Legislation"
by
5-11-2000
Jan L. Warner and Mitchell C. Payne, principals of ElderLaw Services, with the assistance of concerned senior citizens and their families, were instrumental in causing Senator Hugh Leatherman (R-Florence) to withdraw two proviso's to the Appropriations Bill that would have been detrimental to seniors who wanted to plan for long-term care.
After the NextSteps Radio Program on May 9th (each Tuesday at 10:00 on WISNews Radio, 1320 AM in Columbia), a number of listeners voiced their concerns about Proviso's 8.41 and 8.42 to their Senators. Warner and Payne sent letters and other information to all South Carolina Senators and worked closely with lobbyists for the Banking and Insurance Industry to seek withdrawal of these proviso's.
Senator Leatherman withdrew the provisos on May 10th.
Thanks to all of you who helped us defeat this potentially damaging legislation.
